Having an extra freezer bowl is extremely useful if you are making large quantities of ice cream or you plan on making different varieties. Because fresh baked bread
is now a part of our low-carb lives again, when I happened upon this bread knife
in a kitchen store, it intrigued me. One of the problems with eating low-carb
bread is that it doesn't come pre-sliced like we've been used to all these years.
And getting the slices uniform and thin enough to fit the carb-budget bill we set
for ourselves is very important. A confession: I am lousy at slicing bread.
Or at least I was. Our purchase of the OXO Natural Grip Bread Knife was one of the best things I've added to my kitchen arsenal in awhile. In Fran McCullough's best selling The
Low-Carb Cookbook, she highly recommends using a good quality mandoline
for slicing and preparing many of the more exotic (less common) veggies we
creatively use in our cooking. That's what got me to try this, and she's right
a cheap one won't do. A really good one is worth its weight in gold, and with
this, a jicama, celery root, or turnip is short work to turn itself into
hash browns or crinkle cut fries!This French-made mandoline solves two problems posed by stainless-steel mandolines: weight and complexity. Matfer trims weight by mounting stainless-steel blades and plates on a durable fiberglass frame. Thoughtful design banishes operating complexity. (An instructional video answers remaining questions.) What? Low carbers eating eggs? You bet - it's a staple of our diet. But a great
objective is to not let them feel boring and repetitive by having them cooked the
same way all the time. This Salton egg poacher has been so useful to me. I've been
using mine over a year and still love it!Poach one or two eggs, create fluffy individual omelets, or cook up to six soft-, medium-, or hard-boiled eggs with this electric cooker, which actually uses steam to cook the food. A measuring cup (with a built-in egg piercer) is included--fill it with water to the appropriate level for the number of eggs you want to cook and how well done you want them, then pour the water into the nonstick heating vessel. Eggs for poaching and omelets go into D-shaped pans, while whole eggs rest on a rack. Put the clear domed lid on top and turn the dial to one of two cook settings: "silent" (you have to time the cooking) or "buzzer," which alerts you when the food is done.
